Horrific murder in Blk 56, Hall Eleven

A horrific murder has been commited in Blk 56 of NTU's Hall of Residence Eleven, or Hall 11 as if shall be referred to. The body, or rather, what's left of it was discovered by 1 of the occupants of the double room, Raymond Chng, when he was returning after a long day studying in school (yah, right).

The victim was cruelly skinned, possibly alive & the remains were left on the desk, on top of a tissue paper, as if the killer has intentionally done it so as not to dirty the table. The contents were nowhere to be found.

The authorities are still trying to find out the killer & to find out what instigated such a perverse act. Meanwhile, forensic experts are still trying to find out the immediate family of the victim so as to give them closure of the loss of their fruit of their "labour" (pun intended & I know my jokes are cold).

Residents of Blk 56 hope that authorities find the guilty party soon. I personally do not condone such a sadistic act & cannot sleep in peace unless I know the person responsible is locked up in some mental institution for a very very long time.

Instant plant

Lena brought this as a present for me & my sister after coming back from her Bangkok trip. It's a sort of miniature plant in a shot glass. The contents are a shot glass, a capsule & of course, the seeds.

Add water & pop in the capsule. The contents in the capsule will absorb the water, swell & become a gel which supposedly contain the nutrients needed for the growth of the plants.

After the gel has fully swelled, placed the seed on the top of the layer of gel.

The packet of seeds that came in the package.

Now, all we can do is to provide a lot of fresh air, sunlight & occassionally hydrate the gel to keep it moist. Sadly, the plant didn't grow & the seeds remain as seeds. It was a clear sign from above.

I've since throw it away. Wonder how my sister's plant is doing?

Liquid paper pen

Xiaoyen & I decided to have lunch at the Student Activity Centre's Cafe by the Quad. After lunch, I went to the Nanyang supermart's branch beside the Cafe for some "window shopping". As usual, the stationary whore in me burst out & this caught my eye.

Liquid paper pen!!!

Refillable!!!

Finally gave it a trial test & it emerged satisfactory. The liquid paper's consistency is a little more viscious then the normal variety but it was still manageable. I went to Jurong Point's Popular bookstore to check out the prices & it costs 3.80sgd before 10% discount (I've the Popular discount card). Nanyang Supermart's selling it at 3.50sgd, the refill is 2.00sgd. No idea how much the refill costs at popular.

What the liquid paper pen looks like out of it's packaging. It's like a fat pen, for fat hands, for a fat guy (ARE YOU CALLING ME FAT!!!)

The liquid paper refill cartridge. It has a clear layer of gel to prevent the contents from drying out, much like the common gel pens we're using.

I'm a huge stationary whore. :(

Newest building in NTU

This building is beside N1 in the North Spine of NTU. No idea what it will be used for but O do hope they fill up the place with lots of comfortable tables & chairs & vending machines selling all sorts of snacks & stationary & drinks, so that we poor students struggling to get a degree can chill out & study for our exams at the end of the semester. Air conditioning is a must, and do you know what would be a good idea?

Lots of chairs for us to take a power nap in between lessons & during the intensive study period. If they could place these chairs at the study tables, it would be cool too. We could study in comfort, & if we need a nap, we don't even need to leave the table. Just recline & power nap away!!!

Since the school is charging us so much for our school fees & hostel fees are going up as well, maybe they should just go for the kill & get us Osim chairs to relax in!!! Even better, they should restrict the building only to CEE students & their guests since schools like HSS have their own study areas. Since they do not welcome us in their libraries & are so proud of their schools, they should just be banned from our own CEE "Study & Chill Corner".

Dizziness & Michelle do not mix

Today, Michelle wasn't feeling well & it turned out to be quite serious to me as she couldn't stand still & she walked unsteadily. Even though she said she skipped her dinner, I didn't think it was what caused her to feel so giddy as it was not her first time skipping meals. Vomitting once didn;t do anything to calm my nerves, so I decided to bring her to CGH's A&E since all the clinics were already closed. The diagonsis was a viral infection in the inner ear that caused her to feel like the whole room was spinning around.

The word dizzy is used to describe everything from feeling faint or lightheaded to feeling weak or unsteady. Dizziness that creates the sense that you or your surroundings are spinning or moving is called vertigo.

Keeping your sense of balance depends on your brain processing a variety of information from your eyes, your nervous system and your inner ears. However, if your brain can't process signals from all of these locations, if the messages are contradictory, or if your sensory systems aren't functioning properly, you may experience dizziness and loss of balance.Dizziness is one of the most common reasons older adults visit their doctors. Aging increases the risk of developing any of several conditions that may cause dizziness. Although it may be disabling and incapacitating, dizziness rarely signals a serious, life-threatening condition. Treatment depends on the cause and your symptoms.

Signs & symptoms

Characteristics of dizziness may include:

  • A sense that you or your surroundings are spinning or moving (vertigo)
  • A loss of balance
  • Nausea
  • Unsteadiness
  • Wooziness
  • Lightheadedness
  • Faintness
  • Weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Blurred vision following quick head movements

Causes

Under normal circumstances, your sense of balance is controlled by a number of signals that your brain receives from several locations:

  • Eyes. No matter what position you're in, visual signals help you determine where your body is in space and how it's moving.
  • Sensory nerves. These are in your skin, muscles and joints. Sensory nerves send messages to your brain about body movements and positions.
  • Inner ear. The organ of balance in your inner ear is the vestibular labyrinth. It includes loop-shaped structures (semicircular canals) that contain fluid and fine, hair-like sensors that monitor the rotation of your head. Near the semicircular canals are the utricle and saccule, which contain tiny particles called otoconia (o-toe-KOE-nee-uh). These particles are attached to sensors that help detect gravity and back-and-forth motion.

Good balance depends on at least two of these three sensory systems working well. For instance, closing your eyes while washing your hair in the shower doesn't mean you'll lose your balance. Signals from your inner ear and sensory nerves help keep you upright.

However, if your central nervous system can't process signals from all of these locations, if the messages are contradictory, or if the sensory systems aren't functioning properly, you may experience loss of balance.

Dizziness may have a number of potential causes. These may include:

Vertigo
Vertigo — the false sense of motion or spinning — is the most common symptom of dizziness. Sitting up or moving around may make it worse. Sometimes vertigo is severe enough to cause nausea and vomiting.

Vertigo usually results from a problem with the nerves and the structures of the balance mechanism in your inner ear (vestibular system), which sense movement and changes in your head position. Abnormal rhythmic eye movements (nystagmus) almost always accompany vertigo. Causes of vertigo may include:

  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). BPPV involves intense, brief episodes of dizziness associated with a change in the position of your head, often when you turn over in bed or sit up in the morning. It occurs when particles of calcium carbonate crystals (otoconia) break loose and fall into the wrong part of the canals in your inner ear. When these particles shift, they stimulate sensors in your ear, producing an episode of vertigo. Doctors don't know what causes BPPV, but it may be a natural result of aging. Trauma to your head also may lead to BPPV.
  • Inflammation in the inner ear (acute vestibular neuronitis or labyrinthitis). Signs and symptoms of inflammation of the inner ear include sudden, intense vertigo that may persist for several days, with nausea and vomiting. It can be incapacitating, requiring bed rest to minimize the signs and symptoms. Fortunately, vestibular neuronitis generally subsides and clears up on its own. Although the cause of this condition is unknown, it may be a viral infection.
  • Meniere's disease. This disease involves the excessive buildup of fluid in your inner ear. It may affect adults at any age and is characterized by sudden episodes of vertigo lasting 30 minutes to an hour or longer. Other symptoms include the feeling of fullness in your ear, buzzing or ringing in your ear (tinnitus), and fluctuating hearing loss. The cause of Meniere's disease is unknown.
  • Vestibular migraine. The cause of vertigo may be a migraine. People who experience a vestibular migraine are very sensitive to motion. Dizziness and vertigo caused by a vestibular migraine may be triggered by turning your head quickly, being in a crowded or confusing place, driving or riding in a vehicle, or even watching movement on TV. A vestibular migraine also may cause feelings of imbalance or unsteadiness, hearing loss, "muffled" hearing, or ringing in your ears (tinnitus). For most people with a vestibular migraine, vertigo doesn't happen at the same time as the headache. In fact, migraine-associated vertigo may occur without an actual migraine. Attacks of migrainous vertigo can last from a few minutes to several days.
  • Acoustic neuroma. An acoustic neuroma is a noncancerous (benign) growth on the acoustic nerve, which connects the inner ear to your brain. Symptoms of an acoustic neuroma may include dizziness, loss of balance, hearing loss and tinnitus.
  • Rapid changes in motion. Riding on a roller coaster or in boats, cars or even airplanes may on occasion make you dizzy.

Feeling of faintness (presyncope)
Presyncope is the medical term for feeling faint and lightheaded without losing consciousness. Sometimes nausea, pale skin and a sense of dizziness accompany a feeling of faintness. Causes of presyncope include:

  • Drop in blood pressure (orthostatic hypotension). A significant drop in your systolic blood pressure — the higher number in your blood pressure reading — may result in lightheadedness or a feeling of faintness. It can occur after sitting up or standing too quickly.
  • Inadequate output of blood from the heart. Conditions such as partially blocked arteries (atherosclerosis), disease of the heart muscle (cardiomyopathy), abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmia) or a decrease in blood volume may cause inadequate blood flow from your heart.

Loss of balance (disequilibrium)
Disequilibrium is the loss of balance or the feeling of unsteadiness when you walk. Causes may include:

  • Inner ear (vestibular) problems. Abnormalities with your inner ear can cause you to feel like you are floating, have a heavy head or seem unsteady in the dark.
  • Balance disorders. Failing vision and nerve damage in your legs (peripheral neuropathy) are common in older adultsand may result in difficulty maintaining your balance.
  • Joint and muscle problems. Muscle weakness and osteoarthritis — the type of arthritis that involves wear and tear of your joints — can contribute to loss of balance when it involves the weight-bearing joints.
  • Medications. Loss of balance can be a side effect of certain medications, such as seizure drugs, sedatives and tranquilizers.

Lightheadedness
Feeling lightheaded is the feeling of being "spaced out" or having the sensation of spinning inside your head. It can also give you the sensation that if your lightheadedness worsens, you might lose consciousness. Causes may include:

  • Vestibular disorders. These abnormalities of your inner ear can lead to illusions of motion and make you feel like you're floating.
  • Anxiety disorders. Certain anxiety disorders such as panic attacks and a fear of leaving home or being in large, open spaces (agoraphobia) may cause lightheadedness.
  • Hyperventilation. Abnormally rapid breathing that often accompanies anxiety disorders may make you feel lightheaded.

Molestation problem during festive periods

Find out more about her comments about the problem at Xiaxue's blog. I do think this is a real problem, so if you do not fancy getting touched by someone who is not your darling, or you do not fancy your darling being touched by someone other than you, please take some time off to take a look at what she has to say.

Ministry of Sound (2nd attempt)

The guys wanted to try again to get into the newest club in town, & so we decided to meet up at 2230hrs outside the club. Previously I was out shopping for CNY clothes with Michelle, so since I was already in the area, I was pretty early & decided to stop by the reverse bungee to look at it. (See earlier entry) Big mistake, the queue ended a few steps away from the reverse bungee attraction. It was that long!!! I was in the queue since 2220hrs i only managed to reach the front of the queue at 0020hrs. 2 hours of queueing!!! I've been out since morning & I was pretty beat when I finally got in.

This is a picture found on Xiaxue's blog, taken on the opening night, which I was also there. On the night I actually got in, it was a similar situation. I chose to leech this picture from her because I though it was very nicely done, & acccurate.

The entrance to the club. Finally!!! The interior of the club's really nice, so much nicer than most of the clubc I've been to (not too many). Wonder how does Zouk compares with MoS?

OMG!!! What are you doing bro???

Was kind of hungry after clubbing so we decided to grab a bite at the 7-11 in Novetel Hotel just a stone's throw away. Potato salad!!! Yummy yum yum. Slurp...

Dinner @ Bugis Cafe

Was in Bugis area, shopping for Michelle's clothes for the coming Lunar New Year. Spent most of the looking at blouses, Levi's jeans, etc etc when we were hungry during dinner time. Decided to try this cafe in the air-cocnditioned section of Bugis market that we saw the previous time we came to the same place.

The way of ordering is similar to the ordering system at Cafe Cartel. One woman didn't know that & was pissed when she sit there so long but nobody came to serve her. She marched to the cashier & made a fuss. Hmmm... No comments. I didn't like the look of her anyway, but that's an entirely different matter.

&^%$#@!#$%$^*&^%*&*^%$#@!#%^&* Where's my food!!! ^%$!@**@&^%#$!@^@&^*&^^%$$@#^%$

(Believe me, my girl can really cuss! So watch your step & don't make her angry.)

Heez. I'm happy because my food is coming & I have a hot cup of tea to drink.

My aglio olio pasta. It wasn't nice & I could taste the fragrance of the olive oil nor the spiciness of the chilli. There was only some flavour from the peppers & it was oily. Sigh, where can I find aglio olio pasta that meets my standards. Even Sketchers doesn't do it for me.

Kwan Yin Temple @ Four Horses Road

Until I went out with Michelle on our first date, I didn't know where this famous temple was!!! Can you imagine I'm a Singaporean living here for 25 years liao? (Oops, now you all know how old I am liao) Anyway, it's really crowded when the temple is open to devotees to offer joss sticks & prayers to the Goddess of Mercy. I don't think I want to be caught in the human jam during the special occasions.

There are many push-carts selling joss sticks & lotus flowers, among other stuff, which I don't know what they are, because I didn't get a good look at what was on sale. They all basically sell the same thing at the same prices (I assume) so just buy from your favourite auntie or uncle loh.

The interior of the temple. Here, you are allowed to wear your footware into the main hall, but no shoes or slippers on the carpet where you knee to pray, or seek advice on problems bothering you. The only Kwan Yin temple I've been to all my life was the one at Joo Chiat. Things are a little different between the two even though both are Goddess of Mercy temples.
