Omurice

Went out with Shan just before the start of the holidays & long weekend to get some new clothes, or was it just a meet-up after not having seen each other for some time liao. I can't recall. She's busy with her FYP, I'm busy just trying to get from day to day. So finally we had some breathing space so we met up in Orchard as it was both centralized in terms of location & also because it had everything (almost everything, actually). Was kind of hungry as it approached dinner time, so we decided to have lunch. Thought of going to our usual lunch hangout (Sakae Sushi), but we passed by this stall in the basement of Takashima (food court area) so decided to give this a try. A bit on the pricy side (out set cost 8 sgd & comes with a bottled brink like Just Peach Tea & Pokka Green Tea), but the food is made only when ordered & it was o-ee-shi (delicious)!!! This is omurice, a popular food in Nippon (which means japan in japanese, so now u know Nippon Paint literaly means Japan Paint). I had taken an interest to it because I remember seeing this being mentioned in a Japanese drama called "Lunch Queen". Omurice:

CNY reunion dinner

Greetings to all my fellow chinese earthlings. How was your lunar / chinese new year so far? How did this festival come about? I did a little surfing & wouldlike to share what I have found with you.

Chinese New Year (Chinese: 春節, 春节, Chūnjíe; or 農曆新年, 农历新年, Nónglì Xīnnián), also known as the Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It consists of a period of celebrations, starting on New Year's Day, celebrated on the first day of the first month of the Chinese calendar, i.e. the day of the second new moon after the day on which the winter solstice occurs, unless there is an intercalary eleventh or twelfth month in the lead-up to the New Year—in such a case, the New Year falls on the day of the third new moon after the solstice. (The next time this occurs is in 2033.) The Chinese New Year period ends with the Lantern Festival, on the fifteenth day of the festival. Legend has it that in ancient China, Nian ("Nyan") was a man-devouring predator beast that could infiltrate houses silently. The Chinese soon learned that Nian was sensitive to loud noises and the color red, and they scared it away with explosions, fireworks and the liberal use of color red domestically. These customs led to the first New Year celebrations.

The preceding paragraph was adapted from the following website:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_New_Year

A reunion dinner is held on New Year's Eve where members of the family, near and far, get together for celebration. The New Year's Eve dinner is very large and traditionally includes chicken. Fish (魚, yú) is included, but not eaten up completely (and the remaining stored overnight), as the Chinese phrase 年年有魚/餘; (nián nián yǒu yú, or "every year there is fish/leftover") is a homophone for phrases which could mean "be blessed every year" or "have profit every year", since "yú" is also the pronunciation for "profit". A type of black hair-like algae, pronounced "fat choy" in Cantonese, is also featured in many dishes since its name sounds similar to "prosperity". Hakka will serve "kiu nyuk" 扣肉 and "ngiong tiu fu" 釀豆腐. Because the things sound alike, the belief is that having one will lead to the other.

No drugs please

Spent the day with roomie in Bugis & Orchard area because the both os us have some errands to run. I had to collect my jeans that were being altered by a tailor in Lucky plaza (I'm too short & too fat), while he wanted to buy DVDRs & also renew his Kinokuniya membership that entitles him 10% discount on regular priced items (20% on special days).

At the end of a long day spent walking around & breathing in air outside of NTU, we were exhuasted. Kevin suggested we take the express SBS 502 back to Boon Lay interchange so we walked to the bus stop nearest the back entrance of Orchard MRT station.

This was a picture in 1 of those glass display cases that carry advertisments. No drugs, because your loved ones also suffer together with you when you get convicted for a drug-related offence.

Was supposed to meet Michelle after work but I remembered the wrong time & arrived way too early. So I decided to walk around Junction * to pass time. Passed by the stage & saw these Superhosts contestants doing a show. 2 of the girls caught my eye. Heez. Being the photo whore I am, I took out my mobile & sharted shotting away. Should have gone downstairs to stage level where I can get a better angle & get closer to them.

On the backdrop were the contestants & their respective names but I can't seem to match 2 of the girls to their names. Wonder what's wrong with me.

Happy Lunar New Year (Dog)

I heard on the news that the sale of pet dogs have soared in recent weeks in anticipation of the Lunar New Year (Dog). It seems that many Singaporeans buy dogs thinking that it would bring good luck & fortune. However, SPCA then mentioned that in previous years, much more animals were abandoned after the festive season. Eg, if it was the year of the pig, people would buy pigs to usher in the new year, bring good luck & fortune, yada yada yada, & after CNY is over, the pigs get abandoned & SPCA have no choice but to put most of them to sleep (but in the case of pigs, you can make bak kwa or other delicious food that we all ove to eat). So to cut a long story short, I love dogs, among other animals. You want to buy a pet dog to bring good luck, yada yada yada, I've no right to comment. You feel lonely & want a dog to be your companion, carry on. But if you fucking ABANDON the dog after the CNY instead of giving it all the love & care & attention, I'm gonna fucking come after your fucking sorrie arse & fuck you so hard, you wish you were dead!!! KNNCCB. A pet is not a FUCKING TOY!!! How about I treat your daughters like fucking bitches (vulgar pun fully intended)???

Oops, another outburst.

Saw a film crew doing on-site filming for some variety show with Chew Chor Meng & Michelle Chong as the hosts for the show.

The lady in the green bottom & the gentlemen on the left of Michelle are contestants on the show & they must answer some simple questions to win prizes.

Wonder how I would react if it was me on national television. Probably be a bundle of nerves & stammer all the time.

Blue potato chips

Went grocery shopping again at Liberty Supermarket, Jurong Point branch, this time alone. Never shop for food & tibits on an empty stomach!!! Everything seems delicious & you just got to buy them, only to regret buying too much food & junk food after having a meal. Well, I was indeed shoppin gon an empty stomach, & an empty wallet. Somehow I always wanted to try those really expensive potato chips & see / taste for myself what the price premium is all about. So I decided to the the blue potato chips as shown on the left. Wonder if I will turn blue after eating it. Heez.

Going mad from studying too much liao (yah right!!!) Was kinda disappointed. Paid 6 sgd for a bag of chips & I actually prefer those cheap cheap NTUC potato chips or Calbee potato chips. I might give it another chance & buy another flavour. Stay tuned for more potato news.

Liverpool

Liverpool Football Club (often known simply as Liverpool) is an English football club based in Liverpool, Merseyside, and are the current champions of Europe and the most successful English football team to date. Since being founded in 1892, Liverpool have won five European Cups, and 18 Football League titles on top of being the English club to have won the most number of UEFA Cups, European Supercups and English League Cups. The club's home ground is the 45,362 capacity Anfield stadium, which is about three miles from the centre of Liverpool.

The club was founded on March 15 1892 by John Houlding, the owner of Anfield. Houlding decided to form his own team after Everton left Anfield in an argument over rent. The original name was to be Everton F.C. but was changed to Liverpool F.C. (after the F.A. refused to recognise the team as Everton). Liverpool were elected to the Football League alongside Woolwich Arsenal two years later.

The club was present at two of the biggest tragedies in European football — at Heysel in 1985 and Hillsborough in 1989. After Heysel, English clubs were withdrawn from European competition for a period of five years, six in the case of Liverpool.

As one of the the world’s biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game’s biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up. (I do hope you guys realize this is old news)

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who’s who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford’s recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn’t only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds’ facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it’s football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 15 times in their history - eight times in the last 11 seasons. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 10 times, the league cup once, as well as winning the European super cup, European cup winner’s cup, and twice being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it’s hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

The above information is taken from the folowing website:

Guys night out @ Correlian

Among the present were Richard, Chris (not in picture), Yixiang & yours truly. Typically guy's night out. There was drinking, smoking, gossiping (yes, we're man-whores aka male sluts who bitch about anything & everything). There were poker cards & dice tossing (like those you have seen in God of Gamblers). And also Josephine, a girl who works at the Correlian part time. She joined us for drinks & cats with us when she's not serving drinks of making sure our glasses, mixers & ice bucket are filled.

That night, out of nowhere, we decided to talk about our love lives & past relationships, both the ugly & the beautiful. Josephine was in the middle of a relationship that was on the rocks & as she poured out her troubles & shared her sorrows, the tears flowed freely too. We cried, we wept, we talked about how heartless men can be & what headaches we have caused the fairer sex. Women too are guily of all these, but we men are guilty more often. Yes I admit it. We men aree pigs and that's why you girls love us. I think.

It's the first time I've seen the vulnerable side of Josephine. She has given me the impression of a street-wise girl, someone who has been there & done that, but after seeing the tears & hearing what she has to say, underneathe that tough exterior, she's just an ordinary girl who wants what all girls want. A meaningful relationship, someone to take care of and be taken care by, someone she can talk to, share ups & downs, dreams & ambitions.

I hope she finds her Prince Charming or the knight in shining armour, because she deserves better than the creep she cried her eyes out for. I was a creep too, but I've learnt my mistake & must move onto the future.

Brand's chicken essence

Went groceries shopping with Kevin, my roomie , at Jurong Point's NTUC supermaket. Wonder how many of you go shopping for stuff together with your roomie? He's okie, by far the most compatible roomie I had. Anyway this post isn'tgoing to be on roomies but BRAIN FOOD!!!

Remember how your parents used to heat up a bottle of chicken essence for you to take just before leaving to go to school for some test or exam? Well, my mummy did that too. And I didn't particularly like the taste of chicken essense nor see the logic behind drinking it when I did not study for the paper at all!!! Muahahaha. As if this is supposed to help me get better grades when my head is empty. (I have been a really bad student.)

Well, now you can give your loved ones a chicken essence hamper!!! 12 bottles of chicken essence in a nice hamper arrangement for only around 23sgd!!! You can use the basket for other purposes after you have finished drinking the "ji jing" (somehow that sounded like chicken spirit, like bai gu jing or white bone spirit). You can put eggs in them, or maybe use it for flower arrangement. What a great deal (yah right).

Anyway Brand's has expanded their range of products and now includes stuff like bird's nest in a bottle. Up till today, I do have friends who stock up on chicken essence durinig the exam period. I guess this is part of our childhood experiences. Maybe I might do the same for my children too, if I can find a woman, or girl, who is willing to have them with me.

DIY popcorn chicken

This is something new I have decided to try. Instead of the usual instant noodles or mashed potatoes, I'll cook real food, like these frozen popcorn chicken I bought from Liberty supermarket, in an aluminium tray & place them in the microwave oven found in the pantry on medium-high power for abount 8 mins.

They are also available in NTUC under the brand Farmpride (I think this is one of NTUC's house brands). The latter tastes better & I believe it's cheaper than the original packet too.

To ensure even browning, be sure to turn over the pieces halfway through the cooking time. As the popcorn chicken already has some oil in them, there is no need to add more & this makes it slightly "healthier". Eat it together with bread & my supper is done. Yummy!!!

Wow!!!

Look how cute he is in the bright yellow shirt. He's wearing the shirt because the weather is rather chilly recently with the heavy rainfall & gusty winds. Even dogs need to be kept warm, or else they might fall sick.

ZZZzzz... How come I get the feeling someone is trying to take my picture?

Hmmm, I smell food. It's durian!!! Yummy!!!

My dream girl (close approximation)

I prefer my girlfriend to be built for speed, not built for comfort, but it's just a preference, not a hard & fast rule I must follow blindly. So ladies, please don't judge me. I'm sure everyone has their own dream girl. Remember when you were young, you wanted to marry someone tall, dark & handsome? Well, dream on!!! Why don't you take a look at yourself in the mirror? You think you are good enough for soneone that good? Trust me, you're not!!! So get your fucking head out of the fucking sky & look at the real world!!!

Oops, rare outburst. I've known quite a few nice girls who looks at what's on the inside rather than what's on the outside, but far too many bad girls outnumber these people who have a good head on their shoulders & light doesn't pass through in one ear & out the other. Many girls want a guy who is financially stable because you can't really get married & start a family without money, but I guess that's just a way of saying I wanna marry a rich guy so I can live like a tai tai. They want a handsome husband, but these are usually the people who cheat & beat their wives. So choose me!!! I'm ugly, so I can't stray even if I want to. I'm not rich at all, but if you're willing to work hard with me & save like crazy, we can retire when we're about 70 years old, just in time to enjoy a few of the golden years before we die & become fertilizer for the plants.

Anyway back to the girl in the picture. She looks japanese, so maybe I should find an agency that specializes in japanese brides, like those that offer vietnamese bridal matchmaking services, or thai bridal matchmaking services. I do have a list of things I do not want her to be, but the list is secret & politically insensitive, racist & downright discriminating. So if you can stomach the contents, give me a buzz or tag me, & I'll get right back to you.

Try to figure out what type of girls I like. I challenge you. It's not easy, but I guess you can get a lot of hints from the picture.

Too much aijinomoto?

Michelle got her hair cut at Storm, Jurong Point. It was the shortest hairstyle she's ever had, I guess. Nevertheless I liked it. Seems like her parents & younger sister isn't too used to seeing their daughter have shorter hair than her boyfriend, but I do not mind. In fact, I find her as attractive as before, if not more.

It is definitely not because she ate too much MSG (mono sodium glutamate) until her hair start to fall off. I wonder who came up with that notion that your hair will fall out if you eat too much of the seasoning. Must be those people who are too health conscious for their own good.

Anyway since we're on the subject, how about we find out more about this flood flavouring?

What is MSG?

MSG is a flavour enhancer which has been used effectively for nearly a century to brin gout the best flavour of foods. Its principal component is an amino acid called glutamic acid or glutamate. Glumate is found naturally in protein-containing foods such as meat, vegetables, poultry & milk. The human body also produces glutamate naturally in large amounts. The muscles, braan & other body organs contain about four pounts of glutamate, & human milk is rich in glutamate, compared to cow's milk, for example.

Glutamate is found in two forms: "bound" glutamate (linked to other amino acids forming a protein molecule) & "free" glutamate (not linked to protein). Only free is effective in enhancing the flavour of food. Foods often used for their flavouring quaalities, such as tomatoes & mushrooms, have high levels of naturally occuring free glutamate.

Budding musician talent-spotted in Tampines New Town

In case you folks don't know, this is my younger sister, Wenhui. She plays this thing I call an organ, not those inside your body, but something that needs electricity to function & makes music or sound (depending on good you are with it) when you press the keys in some seemingly random fashion.

I do not have the musical gene or the interest in music. I learnt the organ, or was it the piano when I was very very young (I'm 26 years old now) but dropped out. But look at my sister!!! She took part in some competition & I think she got a prize even.

Dinosaur spotted @ NUS

Michelle & I meet up after her work for supper & since I was driving out the cheap korean taxi that day, we decided to go to a favourite haunt, Fong Seng. Actually Fong Seng is the name of the nasi lemak shop along the stretch of shophouses outside NUS, but it has been commonly used to describe the whole row of eateries.

One of the popular drinks is the dinosaur, or iced milo with milo powder sprinkled over the top. It's delicious & very heaty, so try to avoid it during exam period if you do not want to fall ill. At other times, it's a great stress reliever to me abeit a little pricy for a drink you can easily make at home.

The row of shophouses outside NUS. A favourite supper venus for the undergraduates staying on campus & also clubbers after their late night session. I too used to come here for supper after clubbing. The place has a very oily & unhygenic feel to it, but I guess if the place was spick & span, it would not have the same feel to it.

A bull in a Chinatown shop

Michelle & I decided to join her mother & Melissa who wanted to go to Chinatown to take a look at the place & to do some new year shopping. We had dinner at some hawker center that was renovated recently. The place was very crowded & there was a long wait just to get a table, let alone buy food. Every stall seems to have a long queue snaking around the area in front of the respective stalls & by the timewe managed to all sit down & eat, we were already famished & tired.

Melissa is the girl in the picture wearing a black blouse & demin shorts & her mummy is the lady in pink. She looks almost at home because the pink matches the red surroundings.

After dinner, we walked around the upper storeys to look at clothes for Melissa. Michelle doesn't seem interested as she had already set her sights on a pair of Levi's jeans. After a fruitless walk around, we went back downstairs into the open air area where there were stalls selling ornaments, traditional dried food like "lup cheong" & the poor salted duck.

We arrived at this shops selling nothing but traditional ornaments with all sorts of auspicious sayings. The shop wasn't too crowded but it was bright red everywhere!!!

Picture of a section of one of the walls in the shop. Wonder which one should I get for my hostel room or home in Tampines. Hmmm...

Ja neh!!!
