In the midst of the examination pressures & preparation, things can get a little messy, a little emotional, a little overwhelming. The mind goes a little haywire, the body starts feeling the strain in all corners (but I'm so round, still got corners meh???), the spirit gets dejected. I need to go to a Happy Place. I've got quite a few, & Genting is one of them. For various reasons. Some of them secret... 3rd May, marks the beginning of the end. I usually don't anticipate the beginning of ends, but this one I do. From there on, marks another chapter of uncertainty, another period of transition.

French herb chicken with fried rice
Been studying in Seminar Room 3 in South Spine for a good part of my examination preperation period. Nice place, proper tables, with power points & LAN ports under almost every seat & the air conditioning is not too cold. Ron, The Saint & Hairy decide to have dinner in Canteen 4. It's my maiden trip there. There's only 1 zhi char stall there but they serve a good variety of food, with a decent waiting time. Decided to try their french herb chicken (fa guo ji). It was yummy!!! So different from shitty Canteen Eleven. Cheap too. I think it cost SDG$3.50. WOrth my money. 5 pieces of a combination of wings & drumlets. Great seasoning. Good fried rice. I give it 3.5 starts our of 5. Hahaha,I sound like a food gourmet now. Ate the same dish twice in a row for dinner. Looks like it will be sometime before I go back there. Too much of a good thing isn't good. Moderation is the key. Go try it & tell me what you think of it loh. We can go there eat it together again some time.

Guanghui is my name, whats yours???
This is on a bookmark I found at home. No idea at all where this came from, who bought it or who gave it to me. It just appeared. I wish money & gold & other valuable stuff that I want to have will just as mysteriously appear too. Oh well. My name loosely translates as brightness, accordingly to the bookmark. There are 2 chinese characters for light in my name. I'm supposed to be very "bright" but somehow it ain't true, judging from the schools I attend & the results I'm getting so far. My mum said my name was chosen by some senior monk. No comments on that. I'm okie with my chinese name. I know many people prefer to be known by their ang moh name for many reasons. I'm okie with both. Friends from way way back still call me guanghui. So what do your friends call you?

The day I lost my mind
Today is a very black day in my life. I've lost my temper at the 2 women closest to me for trivial reasons and also committed academic suicide. They only had concern for me, they wanted to share their problems and look to me for support but the backlash was undeserving for them. The pressures of being a student is not the cause, but rather my own procrastination, my own incompetence, my own grave I dug with my own hands. I already have forseen this day will come if I do not put in the consistent work demanded from a student in a local University, studying in a demanding course such as Engineering. I've wasted a year retaking my A levels, that alone should be sufficient enough to awake me from fool's slumber, but I stayed within the confort zone, stubbornly refusing to move an inch out of it. I've not practiced what I preached, therefore I'm doubly guilty. I know this would happen, I've told people around me it will come 1 day, but I heed no advice of my friends, my close ones, myself. Nothing can compensate what I have did today. Somehow I felt insane, looking back on the events that lead to the climax of my stupidity.
I did not cry even though my heart was bleeding inside. The most pain comes when you want to cry but the tears just would not come forth. Have anyone of you had this feeling? I pray none of you had such a heart-wrecking feeling as it would mean you had been through as insane, as unexplainable, as helpless as what I had gone through.
The only thing I must focus on are my other 5 papers, & making amends for the negativity I have spread around.
It's a sad day in the life of a struggling CEE student in NTU.

Nurse, I feel so depressed
Exams are coming really quickly, I have not been going out for drinks or clubbing or whatever in quite a while so there's really nothing much to blog about except whine & lament about how I wished I had better time management, better discipline, less procrastination, yada yada yada.
First paper is Hydrology (CL 461). Nothin to do with the pretty nurse but if they were all this good looking (as you noticed, my recent posts are mostly on chio bus!!!), they could really nurse (pun intended) me back to health.
She could help me wash my clothes, dry them & fold them into neat stacks into my wardrobe. She could mop the flor & make it squeaky clean, change my bedsheets too (not because of some unmentionable stains hor!!!). She could do my grocery shopping & buy me all sorts of candy & (should I name my daughter "Candy"??? Hmmm, Candy Chng... Nice ring to it aye?) tibits, not to mention run my errands. Wait a minute, I do have a girfriend right? Isn't that HER job? (This is the MCP speaking).
Oh nurse!!! You make me wanna study for an M.D. right now!!! Kind of late to change degrees, sigh. Must resign to fate unless i'm crapping money from my arse hole.
Wishing those taking exams in four (4) days good luck, discipline, & capacity to retain all necessary knowledge. Those still struggling with FYP, well, get your arses moving!!! Wishing those who have a chance to complete in four (4) yours extra luck & extra brain capacity. Those completing in more than 4 years, hmm, chill bros n sis. Since the journey's gonna be a little longer than usual due to delays, I suggest enjoying the ride, cos it's gonna take a while anyway.
Gambattee!!!

Excellent motivation to quit smoking
Been under increasing stress lately. Final Year Project Supervisor breathing down my neck over my reports, exams coming up in just a few more days, extremely rapidly depleting funds, all the stuff that can bother a young male adult is coming at me all at once, something like a tidal wave, where if you can see the wave coming at you, it's already too late to start running. Stress causes chemical inbalances in the brain & these transate into physical syntoms such as shortness of breathe, lack of appetite, weight gain / loss, etc etc. For the smokers, they start to smoke more. For those who have cut down on their nicotine intake, they go back to previous levels or even surpass them. For the non-smokers, they just do their own thing to release the stress. Girlfriends, if your boyfrieng smokes, why not try this to help him get his mind off the stickies?

Horrors of Foundation Engineering
EC Leong made students in both is tutorial groups stay back from 1900hrs till around 2120hrs so that he can go through the remaining last 2 or 3 tutorials in time for the quiz. I really appreciate all the extra time he's willing to put in, but I nearly went mad staying in school from dawn till dusk. Heez. I'm such a lazy student. Geotechnical engineering ain't easy. The formulas are so complicated & you must remember what each term in the formula means. Sigh. Calculation is another matter. So many numbers, so many different units. So many soil layers!!! Mother Nature didn't intent to make it easy to build things on the ground. Oh well, back to furiously copying whatever EC Leong is writing on the white board. I wish I had better than perfec eyesight, X-ray vision too.

Supper of a Mechanical & Production Engineering student
One night, Kevin was hungry, so he decided to make his own supper. He took the frozen pizza out & wanted to wait for the pizza to defrost before putting it in the microwave oven, but he complained that it was always soggy at the bottom due to all the condensation trapped on the bottom of the tray. He also said that the bottom never gets browned like the sides & the top after heating it in the oven. So he decide to put his 4 years of mechanical engineering training into use. So he made this structure, with a microwavable bowl for elevation & increased airflow, a pair of chopsticks for added stability. It's not purely mechanical engineering at work isn't it? Maybe roomie might have a flair for civil engineering. Hmmm. Oh well, I'm hungry too. Time to make my own supper.

Cheap Malaysian petrol
Have you guys heard of the news that the Malaysian Government plans to impose a RM20 levy on all foreign vehicles entering through Malaysia, regardless of the length of stay? Well, I guess this spells the end of Singaporean drivers going into Johor for supper, petrol, etc. Bervin has been going into Malaysia for supper, car wash & petrol quite frequently recently. I tagged along because I get a free ride in & some time away from my books too. Such trips will be few & far between from 1st May 2006, when the levy is scheduled to begin. Sigh. I wonder what will be the effect on the number of Singaporeans going in, because it will effectively cancel out any savings we get from the cheap food, petrol & car washes. It might be a negligible sum if groups go for long holidays, but for the day trippers, it kind of kills any urge to drive in. Public transport isn't that convenient in Johor because we are unfamiliar with their system. Maybe it might not have a substantial effect at all, & the only winners are our neighbour's government, as they get to spend the extra money. Looks like a game of wait & see.
